The Victorian Internet chapter 1 is a simple introduction into the history of the telegraph. Standage begins by explaining how the telegraph was the original internet, and relating it to how the internet is used now, vs how it was used then. Chapter 1 is a brief history of the telegraph, highlighting important people, such as Claude and René Chappe, who were the first to demonstrate a working telegraph system to the French government, which went on to gain massive popularity, building over 1000 telegraph towers spanning all of Europe. The author also illustraited the failed attempts at convincing the government to invest in electric telegraphs.
