Unwilling to look into electric telegraphs

why was it telegraphs, an invention that was seen as 'magic' to some people of the time, one invention that did not immediately become obsolete when a better version (electronic telegraph) was invented? This goes against our trend of how recent technologies quickly became obsolete.
